North Carolina United Methodist Camp and Retreat Ministries, Inc. is about transforming and nurturing lives. There is nothing more important in this day and age than making sure we are grounded in faith and our priorities are clear.
Melissa is a young lady I had the privilege of working with several years ago. Melissa lived in numerous foster homes, suffered from lack of positive relationships, refused to trust adults and had numerous behavior problems. I took her, along with many other young people, to Chestnut Ridge for a retreat. As predicted, Melissa acted out by refusing to participate in planned activities or even come out of her cabin. We attempted to reach Melissa over and over again, but we were not successful. She surfaced only for meals and would eat only by herself.
I was on the verge of sending her home when (out of frustration and to get me off her back) Melissa decided to watch some of our group on the challenge course. The more Melissa stood observing the experience the more she became engaged. All of the sudden, Melissa stepped right in the middle of a particular challenge.
The group, not knowing what to expect, welcomed and encouraged her. The affirmation and encouragement was all it took. It was like someone turned on the water hose. A smile came over her face. I will never forget her saying, “This is the first thing that I have ever done that ended up being a positive experience.”
The next day, some individuals in our group were ready for the high ropes course. Melissa was the first person to raise her hand and volunteer. I thought she was bluffing. No, she was the first to stand tall. She completed almost every challenge she attempted. Melissa was courageous, trusting and highly motivated.
Melissa was transformed.
This is a simple story but full of truth, passion, and great outcomes. The North Carolina Camp and Retreat Ministries is about making positive change in a person’s life.
It does not take months or years to make a positive change sometimes it happens in the blink of any eye.
Jesus Christ, through nature, spiritual programming and great leadership, transforms and enables people to reach their potential. A day or a week at Chestnut Ridge, Don Lee or Rockfish can transform a life.
I hope you will consider supporting the North Carolina Camp and Retreat Ministries with your prayers, your presence, your gifts and your service.
