Third Thursdays at Chestnut Ridge has been something to look forward to
for the participants from the Burlington District. Over the past year
and a half since it’s inception as a day apart for older adults
especially from small rural churches in the area, the numbers attending
have been steadily increasing. Approximately 76 different persons have
attended, many on a steady basis from at least 13 different churches.
Each month has featured a theme, all of which have been enthusiastically received. Folks attending for the first time even come away with excitement and anticipation for the next month’s gathering. Newcomer Carolyn Seay said, “This was a very rewarding day! It is my first, but it won’t be my last.” Her friend, Lydia Ricks said, “New friends, wonderful fellowship, an exhilarating experience!”
Some of the more faithful attendees have come from Lebanon UMC and are often accompanied by their pastor, Rev. Ray Teague. Frances Poe says, “We always have a good time sharing worship and fellowship. We enjoy meeting new friends from other churches, plus we always have good food and wonderful crafts led by Cely (Chicurel) and also Judy’s (Stephens) program planning.”
Other pastors such as Rev. Grace Hackney and Rev. Rich Greenway have been supportive, and especially Rev. Bill Gattis, Burlington District Superintendent. Pastors coming with their members have been a key to consistent attendance.
The crafts have been a huge hit. This group has enjoyed pottery - making leaves, ghosts, and crosses, among other items. They have painted with water colors, decorated boxes, stuffed pillows, and planted in the community garden. Bible Lotto has been a unique way to learn more from the Scriptures. Inspirational activities are planned for each Third Thursday, along with laughter-filled exercise and joyful singing.
The recent Christmas program included making nativity figures, filling jars with soup mixes and beverages to share with others, making sandwiches with Chestnut Ridge kids and riding Santa’s horse-drawn sleigh through the beautiful woods as well as hearing anew the story of Jesus’ birth and meeting new friends through get-acquainted activities.
Another thing that brings rave reviews has been the delicious meals prepared by Chestnut Ridge staff. Homemade soups have been a hit as well as delicious salads and yummy desserts. Pat Ryan says he “…especially enjoys the sharing, music, and God’s beauty in us and around us.” This age group, with its wisdom, humor, and deep faith have truly been a beautiful addition to Chestnut Ridge, blessing others as they are themselves blessed. |
